Lars Anders TOMTER is one of today most outstanding violists.
Born at Hamar, Norway, in 1959 he began to play the violin at the age of 8. He also took up the viola and studied both instruments with Professor Leif Jørgensen at the Oslo Music Conservatory and the Norwegian State Academy. He gave his debut on both instruments at the age of 17, both of which were well received,
He then continued his studies with Professor Max Rostal and with Sandor Vegh. He was awarded a special price for his interpretation of Bela Bartók Viola Concerto at the International Viola Competition in Budapest in 1984 and then went on to win the Maurice Vieux International Viola Competition in Lille in 1986.
Lars Anders TOMTER's international solo career burgeoned in 1987-88 when he toured extensively in the United States and Germany with the prestigious Norwegian Chamber Orchestra under its director, lona Brown.
Since then, his appearances as viola soloist has been greeted with the highest public and critical acclaim throughout Europe and the United States, from the Vienna Musikverein to major venues In Scandinavia, Madrid, Budapest, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C.
Lars Anders TOMTER performed with such orchestras as the Academy of St. Martins-in-the-Fields, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Frankfurt/Oder, The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Stockholm New Chamber Orchestra, the Gävleborg Symphony, the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the Stavanger Symphony.
The conductors with whom he has performed include Penderecki, Kamu, Arvid Jansons, Kitayenko, Oskamp, Tortelier jr, Talmi, Arwel Hughes, Muhai Tang, Brown Fisher, Schwinck, Porcelijn, Vänske, Starek, Ollila, Kolvola, Fritzsch, Kobayashi, Lukács or Schirmer.
Recent and forthcoming concerts include orchestra engagements with orchestras and recitals in Scandinavia, Korea, USA, Germany, Austria and England, including venues like The Kennedy Center Washington D.C, London Wigmore Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Mozarteum Salzburg. During 1997 he performed at the Salzburg and the Schleswig Holstein Festivals, and with reputed orchestras like the Danish and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestras.
Lars Anders TOMTER has taken part in many Important festivals, like Salzburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lockenhaus, Kissinger Summer, as well as a number of festivals in Scandinavia.
He is music director of the Norwegian Risør Chamber Music Festival, inviting such eminent musicians as Gildon Kremer, Maxim Vengerov, Heinrich Schiff, Joshua Bell, Steven lsserlis, Christian Tetslaff and Ana Chumachenko.
TOMTER has a large repertoire, including all major contemporary works.
He has made several recordings for SIMAX, Aurora, Virgin Classics and NAXOS, all with excellent reviews, Recent recordings includes the Walton & Bartók concertos for NAXOS, Franck & Vieuxtemps Sonatas for SIMAX, Britten: Lachrymae and Mozart : sinfonia Concertante with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra for Virgin Classics. His recordings of Schumann and Brahms Sonatas with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes for Virgin Classics have also been met with top scores,
Lars Anders TOMTER is a Professor at the State Academy In Oslo, supervising a number of Norway's most talented string players.
