Daniel Roehn, born in August 1979, is the third generation in a family of outstanding violinists. His grandfather Erich Roehn was Furtwaengler’s first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, and his father Andreas Roehn is concertmaster for Lorin Maazel’s Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich. Daniel received early musical training from his father, who’s teacher was Henryk Szeryng, and continued his studies with Ana Chumachenco in his native Germany at the “Musikhochschule München“, where he graduated with distinction in 2000. After that, he sought advice and inspiration from artists such as Yuri Bashmet, Ivry Gitlis, Lorin Maazel, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Ruggiero Ricci, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Pinchas Zukerman.
As a soloist Daniel Roehn has performed with numerous orchestras in Germany (including the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, the Munich Symphonic, and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra), in the United States, Switzerland, France, Scandinavia, England, Italy, Belgium, Georgia and other countrys.
In 1998 he won first prize in a competition sponsored by the Cultural Association of the German Industries (Kulturkreis im Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie). In August 2000, he won first and the public prize in the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Competition.
His repertory encompasses most works of the standard violin literature and essential composers from the 20th century. He recorded for various radio stations, among them BR, HR, WDR in Germany, and Radio France in Paris. He also recorded the Mendelssohn Concerto on CD for the Swiss label Claves, and his first recital disc, presenting works by Schubert, Sinding, Paganini, Waxman and others, is about to be released.
In 2002 he played and conducted the Brahms Concerto at the Culture-and Congress Center Lucerne, he appeared on Swedish Television in a Recital from Stockholm, and Lorin Maazel invited him to perform with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra at the “Mozartfestpiele“ in Würzburg. Beside that, he performed at the Rheingau-Festival and chamber music festivals in Tour and Mulhouse.
For 2003, Riccardo Muti engaged him to play several concerts with him and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (Munich and Barcelona, among other cities). Moreover, he will appear with Scandinavien orchestras (Paganini and Korngold Concertos), and in France – Tschaikovsky in Cannes and the Brahms Double Concerto with Cellist Arto Noras, chamber music with Ivry Gitlis at summer festivals. In Genève he plays Mozart with the Genève Chamber Orchestra, in Germany Piazolla with the Georgian Chamber Orchestra. Further CD-recordings are planned with the Swedish label “Caprice“.
The outstanding violin being used by Daniel Roehn is the ex Lobkowicz by A&H Amati, 1617, Cremona, on extended loan through the generous efforts of The Stradivari Society® of Chicago.
