A former student at the Paris Conservatory, in Yvonne LORIOD-MESSIAEN’s class, winner of the First Prize of the International Franz Liszt Competition in Parma and price winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Roger MURARO is today considered one the finest performers of Olivier MESSIAEN’s works.
In 1988, when the pianist performed the Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus in Paris, the composer congratulated him with these works : “Thanks to Roger MURARO for his absolutely sublime complete performance of this very difficult work! With my fullest admiration for his dazzling technique, mastery, his sound qualities, emotion and, I might dare say, his Faith!…”.
It is those qualities described by Olivier MESSIAEN that enable Roger MURARO to play, with moving sincerity, composers whose music leaves a large part to the imagination, to the world of childhood and dreams. SCHUMANN, MOZART… and RAVEL whose complete works for piano solo and with orchestra have aroused considerable interest from numerous concert societies, both in France and abroad. This pianist of Italian origin has collaborated with leading conductors such as Zubin MEHTA, Pinchas STEINBERG, Marek JANOWSKI, Valery GERGIEV, Yuri AHRONOVITCH, Okko KAMU, Marc SOUSTROT, Myung-Whun CHUNG, Kent NAGANO, David ROBERTSON, Pascal ROPHé, Sylvain CAMBRELING… and with prestigious orchestras : the Philharmonics of Berlin and Vienna, the Gewandhaus of Leipzig, the Orchestre National de France, the Residentie Orkester of The Hague, The Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonique de Radio-France, the RSO of Berlin, the Orchestra of the RAI, the State Orchestra of the ex-USSR, the Perth Philharmonic, the Münchner Philharmoniker, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, RSO Wien…
His concerts the world over have been hailed by critics who hear in him an artist of purity and a moving colourist of impressive virtuosity.
February 2001 : Roger MURARO won the Victoires de la Musique award in the “Instrumental Soloist of the Year” category.
During the season 2002-2003, Roger MURARO was invited for the first time in New York Carnegie Hall with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France and Myung-Whun CHUNG ; in Florence Gould Hall in New York, he gave MESSIAEN's complete "Catalogue d'Oiseaux" ; he made also his first appearance with the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Yutaka SADO. Roger MURARO was also the soloist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, the Het Brabant Orkest, the Beethovenhalle Orchestra…After several French cities and major European capitals, Roger MURARO played in Paris, RAVEL's complete piano work, on December 1st 2003, in the Théatre des Champs-Elysées. In addition of numerous recitals in France, Roger MURARO was invited in Netherlands, Ireland, Syria, Germany, Croatia, Portugal, Venezuela…
For the Festival "Lille 2004", he played RAVEL's Concerto in G with the Orchestre National de Lille and in recital, he played MESSIAEN's Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus. With the Orchestre National de Lyon, Sylvain CAMBRELING conducting, Roger MURARO had two concerts in Lyon then a concert in Koln for the RuhrTriennale. During the season 2004-2005, Roger MURARO was invited for the first time in Japan with, during is tour, two concerts in Tokyo (RAVEL's complete piano work and also chamber music of RAVEL). As usual, he had several concerts in France and he'll play also in Dublin, Beyrouth, Alep, Tripoli, Damas… He had again four concerts with the Orchestre National de Lille. He played also with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London Barbican Hall. During this same season, Roger MURARO is also invited with orchestra in Germany, Spain, Brazil, Portugal… He gave MESSIAEN’s “Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus” in Leipzig, Valencia, in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris (May 26, 2005) and also during the Festival de La Roque d’Anthéron.Roger MURARO plays the complete MESSIAEN’s “Catalogue d’Oiseaux” (in only one concert) in Metz (Centre Acanthes) and during the Povoa de Varzim Festival (Portugal). The Salzburger Festspiele 2005 invited Roger MURARO for playing “Turangalîla-Symphonie” ( August 27, 2005).
During the season 2005-2006, Roger MURARO plays in France : recitals and with orchestra (he’ll have three concerts with the Orchestre de Paris), and also in Italy (during the Rimini Festival, he’ll play complete “Catalogue d’Oiseaux” – in only one concert), in Belgium, Zagreb, Trondheim, Vilnius, Manchester, Amsterdam, Faro…
During season 2006-2007, Roger MURARO will play many concerts in France (recitals and with orchestra ) Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France and also in Cardiff (BBC Wales Orchestra), two tours in Japan (December 2006 with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra ; February 2007 : recitals), Portugal, several concerts and recordings with the SWR Sinfonierochester Baden-Baden und Freiburg (Freiburg, Landau, Berlin). He’ll play also in Riga, in Leipzig (MDR Sinfonieorchester), Vienna (RSO Wien Orchester)… In Paris, in addition of concert with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Roger MURARO will give a recital in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. In July 2007, Roger MURARO will be the soloists of the BBC Wales Orchestra, for the London Proms. For 2007-2008, concerts in Taïpeï, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Eire and France.
From September 2006, Roger MURARO teaches piano at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.
